Close to several Military Bases, all of our Communities in La Plata, Hughesville and Newburg are located between 22 and 40 miles from NAVAIR/PAX River, Indian Head Naval Support Facility, Joint Base Andrews, Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, the Pentagon, NOAA, the US Census Bureau, and the Naval Support Facility in King George, Virginia.
Aberdeen Proving Ground is located on Maryland’s beautiful Chesapeake Bay region. This facility is the Army’s oldest active proving ground. Established just six months after the United States entered World War I in 1917, the facility encompasses more than 60 different support activities representing every facet of technology.
Joint Base Andrews is a unique facility due to its high visibility on the world stage and its proximity to the Nation’s Capitol. Located in the neighboring Prince George's County, Joint Base Andrews-Naval Air Facility Washington is often referred to as the military’s premier joint base, Andrews is home to Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine units, and even hosts a chapter of the Civil Air Patrol.
The Naval Support Facility Indian Head was founded in 1890. It was the Navy’s first established presence in Southern Maryland. The facility began many years ago as a gun test facility on the Potomac River and has evolved and expanded to include numerous scientific and response-force missions serving all branches of the military. The Indian Head facility is surrounded by the Potomac River and the Mattawoman Creek.
U.S. Army Fort Belvoir is a United States Army installation. It is located in Fairfax County, Virginia. Fort Belvoir is home to the United States INSCOM and ARCYBER and elements of ten other Army major commands; nineteen different agencies and direct reporting units of the Department of Army; eight elements of the U.S. Army Reserve and the Army National Guard; and twenty-six Department of Defense agencies. Also located here are the 249th Engineer Battalion (Prime Power), the U.S. Army Prime Power School, a Marine Corps detachment, a U.S. Air Force activity, U.S. Army Audit Agency, and an agency from the Department of the Treasury.

Fort Detrick U.S. Army Garrison is located in Frederick, Maryland. It is named for Major Fredrick Louis Detrick. He was a U.S. Army physician, flight surgeon and pilot. Throughout its history, Fort Detrick has contributed many scientific breakthroughs and medical solutions for the Armed Forces and the nation. The history of the post actually began in 1931 when the Frederick airport was renamed Detrick Field and designated a part of the Maryland National Guard.
Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling is located in Southeast Washington, D.C. along the Potomac River. Bolling was established in 2010 in accordance with Congressional legislation based on the recommendations of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC). The legislation ordered the consolidation of Naval Support Facility Anacostia and Bolling Air Force Base. These were separate, but adjoining military installations. This facility became one of 12 joint bases formed throughout the country as a result of BRAC.
Marine Corps Base Quantico is a United States Marine Corps installation. It is located near Triangle, Virginia. The facility covers nearly 55,148 acres of southern Prince William County, northern Stafford County, and southeastern Fauquier County in Virginia. Quantico is home to the Corps' Combat Development Command, which develops strategies for Marine combat. It has a budget of around $300 million and is the home of the Marine Corps Officer Candidates School. The Marine Corps Research Center at Quantico pursues equipment research and development, especially telecommunications, for the Marine Corps. The Marine Corps Brig is also located at Quantico. The FBI Academy, and the principal training facility for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) are also located on the base.
Naval Air Systems Command (Patuxent River) is also known as the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. It is located in Lexington Park, a community in Saint Marys County, Maryland. NAVAIR's mission is to provide full life-cycle support of naval aviation aircraft, weapons and systems operated by Sailors and Marines. This support includes research, design, development and systems engineering, acquisition, test and evaluation, training facilities and equipment, repair and modification, and in-service engineering and logistics support.
The Pentagon (Department of Defense) is a massive Federal building located in Pentagon City. It is very near to Arlington, Virginia and just across the Potomac River from Washington, DC. The Pentagon is the headquarters building of the United States Department of Defense. As a symbol of the U.S. military, the phrase The Pentagon is also often used as a metonym for the Department of Defense and its leadership.
The United States Naval Academy is a federal service academy. It is located in the City of Annapolis in Anne Arundel County. Established in 1845, under Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, it is the second oldest of the United States’ five service academies, and educates officers primarily for the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps. The campus is located on the former grounds of Fort Severn at the confluence of the Severn River and Chesapeake Bay. The entire campus is a National Historic Landmark and home to many historic sites, buildings, and monuments.
